Climate Ambassador Activities in Mumbai

Goal : To create environment awareness beyond classroom among students

Contest : International exchange programme with Globala Gymnasiet, Sweden on Environment issues. Sweden is known for best environment practices. In the exchange programme, Research collaboration regarding “Water analysis” in Mumbai and Stockholm was undertaken.

Practices : MOU between Global Gymnasiet, Stockholm & M. D. College is signed for environment related projects. 22 students & 2 teachers from Global Gymnasiet visited M. D. College in January 2015 and 15 students & 3 teachers of M. D. College visited Global Gymnasiet in the month of May 2015.

  1. Students were trained out of classrooms visiting 9 schools with the support of NGO “Srushti Dyan” for educating them about various environment related issues.
  2. They were taught many activities :
    • Preparing seed bank
    • Best out of waste
    • Zero waste concept
    • Energy audit
    • Water audit
    • Prepare Solar Cooker
    • To celebrate “earth hour”
    • Setting up butterfly garden

These students were distributed in 9 different schools and they further carried out these activities with school children.

Continuous sustained activities with Sweden counterparts happened through skype meetings.

When the Swedish students visited M. D. College, they did water analysis of Mahim Creek and the study of Socio economy of Dharavi Slums Further, the whole environment study ended in a huge environment related exhibition and conference at Yashwantrao Chavan Auditorium visited by a number of experts.

This whole exercise was further continued by our students and teachers visit to Stockholm (sponsored by Sweden & Management of M. D. College).

The study undertaken there was a) Study of water quality b) Study of waste disposal management system.

  • Meeting with Dr. Rajendra Singh, Waterman of India.

Evidence of success –

  • Solid Waste Management System of Stockholm was studied.
  • Students have prepared a video film on the waste management and uploaded on youtube to create awareness.
  • In the college, Zero waste management and compost making is practiced.
  • Our college students have totally got exposure to another country and their living standards, their practices of environment case.
  • They have seen how children of the nursery are also trained to segregate waste and dispose waste in the right manner.
  • This collaboration continues for another two years. The Sweden were again in Mumbai to study Sustainable development and Green Spaces.
